What is theVCUAA Richmond Promise?

The Virginia Commonwealth University Alumni Association (VCUAA), in partnership with the Richmond Public School System, and A Gathering of the Ways, will endeavor to support the district’s student population to better serve their needs while enhancing the community at large. With the support of VCU alumni, students, business and community partners, our VISION is to assist every child in the Richmond Metropolitan Area become ready to enter and succeed in higher education and aware of the benefits of enrolling at VCU.

VCUAA Richmond Promise Mission:

Our mission is to surround students in the Richmond Public School System with the resources and support needed to successfully meet the challenge of higher education by entering an undergraduate program at VCU or another post-secondary institution that supports their educational and life aspirations.

Activities:

One-On-One Mentoring: from VCU students (sophomores, juniors) who will make at least a two-year commitment to the program and who have completed training with the VA Mentoring Partnership.

Career Exploration & College Major Identification: provided by college mentors and VCUAA volunteers who will assist students in understanding the 21st century job-market and the associated preparation students choose undertake to successfully identify potential career directions and the courses needed to support their interest(s).

Parent Education: provided by educators and parents themselves to assist with identifying and supporting ways that parents can actively remain involved in their children’s education, including course selection (HS and College), college selection, financial aid requests, etc…

Pre-Collegiate Summer Program (Residential) *Coming Soon: directed and provided by staff, volunteers, and college peer counselors, this 3 to 5 week activity will provide students with “real world” college preparation; classes on the VCU campus instructed by University professors; residence hall life (time away from home); and academic and social skills development to decrease college “shellshock” experienced by many freshman college students.
